Using "SmartConnect" on your Nokia Smartphone

If you have been using a Nokia Smartphone which provides multiple connectivity options like Wi-Fi, 3G, GPRS, EDGE, you will mostly find an application by Birdstep named SmartConnect. SmartConnect is a connection management application & will be listed in your Apps section with the name "SC".

There are many existing Symbian applications (which access Internet) which do not support the Access Groups like Internet, WAP, etc which are part of Destinations in Phone connection settings. Such applications either directly support the Access Points like Wi-Fi, 3G, etc or support the Access Groups created in SmartConnect. To enable such applications to automatically support the available Access Point you can create an Access Group named "Internet" in SmartConnect. You then need to add all available Access Points which you need to use under the newly created Access Group & set the priorities of these Access Points. You can now select this Access Group "Internet" in the application which you are using rather than a single Access Point like Wi-Fi or 3G. This will enable the application to automatically select an Access Point listed under the Access Group "Internet" based on availability & the priorities set. One of the applications where you will need SmartConnect Access Groups is the inbuilt E-mail application which is part of Nokia Messaging.

Nokia E72 Accelerometer - YES it works!!!

From the time I had purchased my Nokia E72 I always wondered whether the Accelerometer in the phone really worked. I found out that Nokia E73 had a fully implemented Accelerometer wherein the main screen would rotate with the phone's orientation. I then discovered that there was only a minor implementation of Accelerometer function on E72 - you could flip your phone upside down to silence an Alarm or Reminder, or to silence an Incoming Call.

I kept on searching for applications which would truly demonstrate the Nokia E72's Accelerometer functionality. I feel happy & excited to announce a couple of signed Symbian apps which work perfectly & utlilize the phone's Accelerometer.

Here are they -

1. Nokia Image Exchanger - An intuitive image browsing & online image sharing application which turns your phone's stored images based on your phone's orientation. You can register, download & install the app from http://imageexchange.nokia.com/

2. SymbiMaze - This is an interesting Maze game wherein you need to tilt your phone to make the ball avoid the obstructing holes & finally fall into the yellow hole. By playing this game you will realize how sensitive the ball in the game is to your phone's orientation. You can download the game from http://symbimaze.sourceforge.net/

Resetting your Nokia Messaging subscription

These days whenever you buy a new Nokia phone, mostly the Business phones, it comes with a lifetime free subscription of Nokia Messaging. Nokia Messaging is a nice service which enables you to configure & sync 4 E-mail accounts on your Phone - typically Exchange/Lotus mails, Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail & some other personal e-mail account.

Unfortunately I recently discovered that Nokia has discovered a bug (which they are obviously trying to fix fast) due to which the Nokia Messaging account (it gets registered with the first personal e-mail address that you configure on your phone) gets deactivated & the Nokia Messaging subscription shows as canceled all of a sudden. The user then receives an automated e-mail from Nokia as given below -
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Nokia Messaging customer,

The Nokia Messaging account you have been enjoying came as part of the purchase of your Nokia phone. According to our records, that phone has been transferred to another person.

Your Nokia Messaging account has been deactivated. Your account is safe - it cannot be accessed by the new owner of your Nokia phone. In addition, you can sign up for a new Nokia Messaging account for use on another Nokia phone. Please visit the Nokia Messaging website (http://email.nokia.com/account) to see a list of Nokia phones that run with Nokia Messaging.

We look forward to serving you again.

Sincerely,
Nokia Messaging team

Since the subscription gets canceled, you will not be able to sync your personal e-mail accounts. Currently to fix this problem there is no other way out other than calling Nokia Careline. In India you can dial 080 - 30303838 to reach Nokia Careline. The technical support representative will then take down the details like your Name, Cell Number & your Phone's IMEI number (dial *#06#). Within minutes the account will be reset & your Nokia Messaging subscription will temporarily reflect as TRIAL & then reflect "Nokia Messaging subscription - purchased with device".

So please don't worry if you suddenly receive this strange mail from Nokia. Call Nokia Careline & reset your Nokia Messaging Lifetime subscription!!!

Making your Nokia E72 Wi-Fi work perfectly with your Wi-Fi Router

I bought my dream gadget last week - a Topaz Brown Nokia E72. I was thrilled to use it when unpacked, but unfortunately its Wi-Fi disappointed me a lot. The phone would smoothly connect to my Wi-Fi Router but after that browsing & downloading was almost impossible. I scanned numerous Net Forums & partly solved my problem.

The first solution was to go to the Advanced Settings of your access point & manually assign the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway & DNS Servers. But this too did not completely eradicate my problem until I found out the trick yesterday. I have a Netgear WGR614 Wi-Fi Router which has an option to "Enable WMM" which is supposedly to enhance Multimedia / Streaming experince on Wi-Fi devices. Unfortunately I suspect the implementation of WMM to be a little bit faulty either on the Router or on the Phone. So disabling it fixed my problem completely & I am just loving browsing, downloading & watching streaming links on my phone.

So here is the complete list of steps which you need to set to have a perfectly working Wi-Fi on your Nokia E72 -

1. If you have Protected Wi-Fi setup (WEP/WPA/WPA2) on your Wi-Fi Router along with MAC filtering, you then need to first determine the MAC address of your Phone. Dialing *#62209526# on your Phone's main screen gives your Phone's MAC address. Keep this noted.

2. Permit the above noted MAC address on your Wi-Fi Router for Internet access.

3. If required, assign a Static IP for your Phone on the Wi-Fi Router.

4. Diable WMM if enabled on your Wi-Fi Router

5. Now go to Menu->Control Panel->Settings->Connection->Destinations & add your Access Point under the Internet category. Open the Access Point settings & go to Adavanced Settings option. Now manually set the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway & DNS Servers on the Phone.

Voila!!! Your Phone is all set for an excellent Internet experience.

Extracting & Printing data from Protected PDF's using Google Docs

How often that we receive PDF documents from people which are electronically protected in such a way that we copy text from document as well as print it. So whats the trick to get your work done?

Its simple, follow any of the 2 steps mentioned below -
  1. Send the PDF as an attachment to one of your Gmail ID's. In your Gmail account select the option to open the document in Google Docs. OR
  2. Open Google Docs & upload your PDF file.
Once the file is available in Google Docs, it gets automatically converted to HTML format. Though there would be significant loss in data formatting, you can still extract data from the file & print it as required.

Isn't this simple. Try it!!!

My Google Cheque of 100$

After 2-3 years of Blogging on Blogger, I was happy to find the cheque of 100$ couriered from Google. These earnings were a part of the AdSense program of Google.

Though the Dollar rate is hovering around INR 46, I received the amount at a conversion rate of INR 47 approximately. It's a very very exciting moment for me to receive this cheque as it is the reward of my creative work. Though its been more than a month or so that I haven't posted anything, don't get disappointed, I would be back soon with some interesting posts on Technology.

So look out for newer posts on this Blog & you too join the Blogosphere!!!

Syncing your Outlook Calendar status with Office Communicator

This post is specifically meant for users using Office Communicator in conjunction with Microsoft Outlook, at work. Many a times you might find that while you are on a meeting which reflects on your Outlook Calendar, your Office Communicator still shows your status as "Online" rather that "In a Meeting".

The solution to this problem is very simple. This generally happens when your Office Communicator is not able to read your Outlook Calendar. To correct this problem always keep an eye on the lower right hand corner of the status bar of your Office Communicator. If your Office Communicator is unable to read your Outlook Calendar you would see a small Server icon with an exclamation shown in the status bar. On hovering your mouse over the icon you would see an error as shown on the right.

To solve the
problem just double-click on the icon which would pop-up a message as shown on the right. Just click on YES & you would soon find out that your Office Communicator reflects the correct status as per your Outlook Calendar entry.

Do let me know once you try out this.

Fixing your PS/2 Keyboard detection problem

Last year in April I had to replace my original Intel 865 GBF Motherboard as it had gone bad due to my SMPS. At the same time I also changed my SMPS. Everything was running smooth when all of a sudden (from past 2 months) my Motherboard stopped detecting my PS/2 Keyboard occasionally during boot-up. The Keyboard would again start working if I unplugged it & plugged it back again.

I initially thought that possibly my PS/2 Port had gone faulty when my Keyboard wired stretched too much while I was working on my PC few months back. I also thought that my Keyboard (which was around 4-5 years old) had gone faulty I thus got another spare Keyboard from my neighbor for testing purposes. I initially exchanged the Keyboard & Mouse by connecting into each others Ports. But nothing actually worked.

After frantically searching for the solution on the Net last night I interpreted a small little thing though I did not get a direct solution to my problem. Most of the forums talked about USB Power utilization's. It then suddenly struck me that I had permanently connected my external 1 TB Hard Disk to my USB Port which might possibly be drawing Power during boot.

The Final Solution - Keep any USB Powered devices disconnected during Boot if you encounter a similar problem. You could also press your CPU's RESET button if your PC does not proceed with the Boot process in the 1st attempt & continue to keep your USB Powered devices connected during Boot.

Do let me know if my solution works for you.

Consumermate - the ultimate destination for latest prices across models for Mobiles, Digital Cameras & Laptops

My friend's Birthday was lined up within the next 2 weeks & I planned to gift him a Mobile. I was totally confused about how to channelize my buying decision. Then it suddenly struck me about my good old friend, who else - Consumermate, & within 10 days or so the Birthday gift was at my doorstep.

Consumermate is the ultimate destination for latest prices across models for Mobiles, Digital Cameras & Laptops. Once you visit this site, you would simply close the doors for other online Tech portals for buying your favorite goody. Not only do you have an option of searching a humongous database of Mobiles, Digital Cameras & Laptops, you can also have a competitive price check, feature review, user reviews & last but not the least - to buy the item online from the reseller.

Something which is now popularly being used by users is to search for Mobile Phones price. Users also frequent this site to check SLR Digital Cameras price. Nikon being a very widely known Digital Camera brand, the SLR Nikon section also gives you a good preview of the latest range of SLR cameras from Nikon. I personally own a Nikon Coolpix P90 camera, which I love very much & whose buying decision was obviously inspired by Consumermate.

All this time I have been speaking only about Mobiles & Cameras. The portal also has a dedicated section for Laptops. The latest trend these days are the ultra-portable Laptops, also known as Netbooks. There is a good database of Netbooks too.

Why don't you check out the portal & book your favorite gizmo right away!!!

Online Music - once a dream, now a reality!!!

I still remember those days when I had enrolled at NIIT to complete GNIIT in the year 1996. It was the initial days of Internet in India. With unstable connections, slow speeds & very few service providers it was still very interesting as we all got connected to the gigantic information database. In those days I couldn't even imagine streaming data over the existing net connection.

On Feb 16, 2010 MTNL Mumbai (my local ISP) upgraded the Unlimited Internet Plans on many Tariff Plans. I believe an Unlimited Internet Plan with a basic speed of 1 Mbps at a reasonable rate is what you need to enjoy the basic streaming experience. I now pay INR. 999 & am having the speed of 1 Mbps with an Unlimited Plan which I just told you earlier.

There might be 100s of sites providing streaming Music. I just found a site which provides some good Online Music & Radio. The best part is it provides a downloadable player with interchangeable skins, that can be used to listen to Online Music, Radio & Videos. Here is a screen-shot of the players' default skin -

Ohh!!! I forgot to mention the site. Its www.dizzler.com. It has a good collection of Bollywood songs, which I generally enjoy & possibly that's why I spoke of this site. he streaming quality & speed also seems good over a 1 Mbps connection. Why don't you visit this site & enjoy some cool Music?

Re-encoding video into 1 CD DivX format

Many a times we download videos from the Net or copy a video from a friend which are either too large to fit into 1 GB Pen Drives or which are incorrectly encoded to be copied onto Pen Drives & played our new generation DivX compatible Home Theater Systems or LCD TV's.

This post describes with simple screenshots on how to re-encode such videos into 1 CD DivX or XviD formats -
  • The first & foremost thing is to note the duration & dimensions of the video either through Windows Explorer or through the Media Player which plays the video in the PC.

  • Now convert the video duration into minutes. For example the video shown in the example is converted from 2 hours 28 minutes 41 seconds to 149 minutes
  • Download WeeHetBitRates &calculate the Video Bitrate required to encode the video. Here you need to key in the video duration that you calculated in the last step & set it to 710 MB *80 min) Standard CD Size. I have found that encoding videos with Audio Bitrate set to 96 Kbps is quite good enough. Now note down the Average Video bitrate which the applications displays
  • Download Super & install it. It is an excellent video encoding & multiple video format conversion application. While encoding videos through Super please ensure that all applications are closed & the Heuristic scan in your Anti-virus application is disabled, as Super utilizes lot of your PC's resources. Now add the video to be encoded in Super, select the Output format, Video Bitrate, Audio Bitrate & other basic settings & start encoding your video. A standard 2 hours video generally takes almost 4-6 hours to encode.

Isn't the process of re-encoding simple? Now don't worry if you haven't received your favourite in the right encoded format.

(Disclaimer: This post is intended to help readers re-encode legal videos. Video piracy is strictly discouraged by the author.)

Colors

Its been almost 3 months since I bought my Nikon Coolpix P90 super-zoom camera. I hve captured some very colorful snaps of flowers & other natural things. How about sharing the same with you lovely people.

Few Digital Photography Tips

After years & years of thinking I finally bought a quite a good Digital Camera (Super Zoom) about 2 months back. Though I have been clicking digital photos from quite sometime (since Sep'2001), I always thought that I would always carry 1 cool gizmo which would solve all my purposes. All these years my Phone has always been the coolest product I have always help - right from Photography to Internet to Push Mail to GPS. Finally I realized that by craze for Photography, especially Wildlife Photography, could never be satisfied by a Cell Phone.

I have gone for Nikon's Coolpix P90 24X Zoom Camera. Thought it is not a DSLR camera, it offers lots of manual controls like Manual Focus, Shutter control, Aperture Control, White Balance control, Exposure Control, etc. Adding a few more bucks would have given me a DSLR, but I had to again pay extra for a Zoom lens which would be very costly. So I settled for this one & seemed to be quite happy with its performance.

Since I am not a Professional Photographer I should not give too much of gyaan but would definitely share some of my experiences from my mistakes & some common mistakes which I find my friends committing while clicking snaps through their Digicams -
  1. Digital Cameras are very sensitive to shakes. You need to really have a very stable hand to click a sharp picture with the Digicam & that comes merely with practice.
  2. When clicking human snaps don't just concentrate on the subject (i.e. people visible on the viewfinder), also try to have a check on the background. The background gives real perspective to a good snap.
  3. Never click a snap with a bright light falling on the camera lens.
  4. With basic digital cameras don't try to click distant images with the flash under low lighting conditions. There are fair chances that the image might not turn out to be good.
  5. Avoid clicking snaps under harsh sunlight, that's mid-afternoon. The best time sto click a snap are dusk & dawn.
  6. Don't click all snaps in Landscape mode, i.e. camera held horizontally. Few snaps come out excellent when clicked in Portrait mode, i.e. camera held vertically. This is a common mistake I find among most of the amateur photographers.
  7. If you realize that a snap clicked is not good, delete it immediately. At the end of the day you would occupy unnecessary space on your camera's memory with useless snaps.
  8. While uploading your snaps to a public photo-sharing site, do have a check on the repetitiveness of the snaps. I find many people uploading multiple copies of same picture with minor change uploaded. It distracts the viewers.
  9. If you have time, do check out if editing the images result in a better snap. Even basic image management software's like Picasa is good enough for editing.
These are some of the noticeable mistakes which I thought of highlighting. If I recollect some more, I would keep updating this post. You can have a glimpse of my Photography from http://www.flickr.com/photos/baudhayan.
