Using "SmartConnect" on your Nokia Smartphone

If you have been using a Nokia Smartphone which provides multiple connectivity options like Wi-Fi, 3G, GPRS, EDGE, you will mostly find an application by Birdstep named SmartConnect. SmartConnect is a connection management application & will be listed in your Apps section with the name "SC".

There are many existing Symbian applications (which access Internet) which do not support the Access Groups like Internet, WAP, etc which are part of Destinations in Phone connection settings. Such applications either directly support the Access Points like Wi-Fi, 3G, etc or support the Access Groups created in SmartConnect. To enable such applications to automatically support the available Access Point you can create an Access Group named "Internet" in SmartConnect. You then need to add all available Access Points which you need to use under the newly created Access Group & set the priorities of these Access Points. You can now select this Access Group "Internet" in the application which you are using rather than a single Access Point like Wi-Fi or 3G. This will enable the application to automatically select an Access Point listed under the Access Group "Internet" based on availability & the priorities set. One of the applications where you will need SmartConnect Access Groups is the inbuilt E-mail application which is part of Nokia Messaging.

SmartConnect is good software, but unfortunately it may create a lot of problems if you are trying to use this software with any VPN software on Nokia phones, for example with famous SymVPN software or less popular Nokia mVPN.
In this case phone may restarts or you can see other problems. A lot of problems with SmartConnect may experience users of Nokia E72 phones. At some point SmartConnect developers were offering the special Path to fix SmartConnect problem on Nokia E72.
