Hassle-free casting of Online Videos to Chromecast using "PlayTo" Chrome Browser Extension

After I returned to India from UK one thing which bothered me most was some documentaries which I would regularly watch on UK television. Chromecast along with the FilmOn.tv Android app bridged this gap since I could easily watch many International channels sitting in India. I would first launch the channel on my Phone and then cast it on my TV using the Casting icon. Unfortunately the developers of this App don't seem to properly test this App before its release. So frequently I would find issues with casting. The Channels would play on the Phone but fail to play on my TV with Chromecast, it just keeps showing "Buffering........".

After some research on the Net I finally have a solution - a useful Chrome Browser Extension called PlayTo for Chromecast.

Once this extension is installed it has a toggle option to turn it On and Off. When turned on it automatically pops-up a dialog to cast the video to Chromecast when you view most of the online video streaming sites.
While you have the cast option built onto Chrome Browser to cast the tab on Chromecast, there is a small issue when you cast tabs with streaming videos. What happens with the Google Cast extension on the Chrome Browser is that it mirrors the display so the bandwidth utilization is large which causes lag while you watch video. With PlayTo extension this issue is resolved. While it still uses the Chrome Browsers Cast extension, what it basically does is a casting similar to what you do from your Android Phone - it send s a link to Chromecast rather than mirroring the display. What this essentially means is once the video is played on your TV through Chromecast, you have an option to close the Browser or shutdown your PC as the video continues to play on the TV.

Why not explore this extension right away.........happy Casting!

Windows 10 is coming! - small things to note

Jul'29 2015 is a date to look out for when Microsoft launches Windows 10. So if you have a PC which qualifies for the upgrade, then that date is not far enough.

So if your taskbar shows a small white windows icon above, your PC qualifies for the upgrade. Though reservation is not compulsory, I would suggest to reserve your copy so that you receive your copy at the earliest. You need to right click on the icon and select the option to reserve your copy. While this upgrade is free for most of us, there might be few PC's for whom this is not free. Do read this document - http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-upgrades-wont-be-free-for-everyone-do-you-qualify/

Once you reserve your copy of Windows 10, you receive a confirmation mail from Microsoft. While I wait for the D-day, one important thing to be noted is to ensure that you have a good broadband with a healthy download limit. Microsoft tells that the download will be around 3 GB. While I still try to figure out how to download a single copy and use across devices, you go ahead and reserve your copy now!

Giving that extract Juice to your Phone's Battery during emergency

While most of us have Smart Phones most of us also suffer from severe Battery drains on mid-range Phones. So what do you do when you are travelling, no charging point available and you need to give your Phone's Battery that extra Juice to last for some more time -

1. If you are travelling in a long distance train then it makes sense to put your phone in "Offline" mode when you train travels through remote places where you have less Network Towers. Your Phone spends the maximum Power searching for a Network rather than when you actually make a call.

2. While 3G has been rolled out in many countries including India few years back, the 3G coverage is not satisfactory according to my expectations and also the Voice / Data quality is poor. So if you are not using 3G for Data or connected to Wi-Fi it makes sense to put your Phone's Network Mode to "2G" which will save Power.

3. In many Android Phones I have found the following Network Modes available -

WCDMA preferred - Same as "GSM/WCDMA (auto connect)". Both 2G and 3G data capability, 3G favored more when signal strength is low
GSM auto (PRL) - 2G is favored more when signal strength is low. Both 2G and 3G data.
CDMA auto (PRL) - both 2G and 3G, 2G (CDMA) is favored more when signal strenth is low.
CDMA only - 2G data only, no data when 2G signal strenth is low.
EvDo only - 3G data only, no data when 3G signal strength is low.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - auto-switching between GSM and CDMA capabilities.

Selecting GSM auto (PRL) will save some Power where 3G coverage is poor. (The information in Point 3 is courtesy: http://www.speedguide.net/faq/gsmwcdma-auto-or-gsm-only-setting-on-android-phone-408 )

With the information above I am pretty sure that when you land up in a Power-hungry situation you know what to do.

DIY: Dislodging a corroded / rusted screw jammed across a Plastic surface

I recently faced a situation wherein the Door housing the mirror of my Toilet Cupboard (Plastic made) collapsed owing to the reason that the 2 x screws holding the door had severely worn out and got corroded / rusted due to humidity. Though the Toilet Cupboard was around 8 years old I did not want to get rid if it as it was all good to use except that the door had come off. So the best way was to fix the door to the main unit by replacing the 2 x screws.

I faced a daunting task when I saw the condition of the screws - they were worn out to such an extent that the head of the screw had almost gone flat and there was absolutely no way to dislodge the stubborn corroded / rusted screw using a screw driver. Applying little bit of pressure using a sharp object from the tail end also didn't work, as the screw had completely got entangled in the plastic body of the Toilet Cupboard.

Suddenly a brilliant idea struck me and which worked wonderfully and that's the same I will share with you how to dislodge such a corroded / rusted screw from a plastic surface / body - do remember, this should work only with a metallic screw stuck in a plastic body due to the science involved in this method.

Best Out of Waste: Building a Fast and Easy Internet Browsing Terminal with your old PC

A few days back my high-end HP Pavilion DV6 Notebook crashed due to a Hardware failure. Though it was my primary PC for all purposes - Music, Videos, Desktop Publishing, Photography, etc., for my dad and other family members it was primarily meant for Internet browsing and also sometimes for Videos and Music.

While my PC productivity remains unaffected due to my alternate personal Notebook, the other family members started desperately complaining since there was no Browsing Terminal available. So if you have a similar situation I have a solution for you.

How you can fake your Android Phone's Battery Life

Many of you might already know that you can know the up-time (Battery Life) of your Android Phone by going to Settings -> Battery, from where it shows the amount of time the Phone is running without being charged. But do you know that this up-time can be fooled due to the way Android has been set as. This up-time counter only gets reset once the Phone gets charged 90 - 100%. So if you charge your Phone multiple times in a day, the up-time keeps continuing provided in each charge you have never charged up to 90 -100%.

Have a look at the screenshot from HTC One X Phone with 1800 mAH Battery and you know what I said in the previous para :-) So may be well be able to fake and make your friends believe that your Phone has an enormous Battery life!

Automating your Phone Dialing using "Pause" and "Wait" sequences

In a corporate life full of meetings we know how often we need to dial-in to Telephonic Conference Meetings or what is also called Conference Bridges. In some meetings you may be the host while in some you may be the guest, some meetings may be regular while some may be ad-hoc.

Whatever be the type of telephonic meetings one thing doesn't change is that you first need to dial-in to Conference Bridge number and in many cases these Conference Bridges asks you to be authenticated using a Conference / Moderator Code, Pass Code, Client ID, etc. Though we all use Smartphones we don't use a very basic feature which has been in the Telephonic world for almost a decade or so.

There are commands which can introduce Pause and Wait situations in the Phone numbers that we dial-in.

Fine tuning WhatsApp to Pop-up important messages

As we all know Science is both a boon and bane. Same is to do with Social Networking sites and Apps. WhatsApp is one among them. The type of abuses are in-numerous - unsolicited messages, numerous jokes/videos, etc.

While few prefer to stay away from this abuse by not registering at WhatsApp, I prefer to use the App and set it the correct way so that it remains non-intrusive. So here I give you few tips for WhatsApp -

Customize your own Android Phone with CyanogenMod ROM, OnePlus One and HTC BlinkFeed

*** While this post is written with HTC One X as base. This post is applicable for any Phone which is rooted and supports CyanogenMod ROM ***

It's been almost 3 years now since the launch of HTC's flagship phone HTC One X. While there have been countless phone's launched in the past 3 years I continue to love this phone owing to its lovely camera and the lovely custom ROM's available.

The ROM I loved for the maximum duration is the ViperX ROM by Team Venom but unfortunately the updates of ViperX have moved in snails pace since the team now mostly concentrates on HTC One series. One of the main reasons I liked ViperX ROM was due to Sense 6 which in turn supported HTC's BlinkFeed launcher which I found very helpful for news aggregation.
